Ebook About Digging Up Bones: Book OneCloister Witte is a man with a dark past and a cute dog. He’s happy to talk about the dog all day, but after growing up in the shadow of a missing brother, a deadbeat dad, and a criminal stepfather, he’d rather leave the past back in Montana. These days he’s a K-9 officer in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and pays a tithe to his ghosts by doing what no one was able to do for his brother—find the missing and bring them home. He’s good at solving difficult mysteries. The dog is even better. This time the missing person is a ten-year-old boy who walked into the woods in the middle of the night and didn’t come back. With the antagonistic help of distractingly handsome FBI agent Javi Merlo, it quickly becomes clear that Drew Hartley didn’t run away. He was taken, and the evidence implies he’s not the kidnapper’s first victim. As the search intensifies, old grudges and tragedies are pulled into the light of day. But with each clue they uncover, it looks less and less likely that Drew will be found alive.Book Bone to Pick (Digging Up Bones Book 1) Review :
I wanted to like this book, but there was too much to overcome. The first and worst was the main character's name, Cloister. I almost didn't buy the book because of the name, but didn't listen to my gut because it had an FBI agent, a cop, and a canine. I thought I could live with the name. Boy was I wrong. That name had nothing at all to do with anything except a room in a church. The author could have named him apse, nave, or even altar (at least he could have a nickname of Al) and it would have made as much sense. Lyndsay Sands and Charlie Richards give their characters weird names, but their characters are all centuries old and names used to be different. This guy is a modern man. There is no way in heck his parents would give him a name like that unless they were drunk or drugged. The second problem for me was that the writing seemed off, like a quarter bubble off plumb. I just couldn't seem to connect with the story. The characters all seemed either too much or not enough and it became uncomfortable to read and, along with that horrible name, I couldn't finish it. For me, this was a struggle to rate. Besides the fact that the overall feeling I had with this story was pessimistic and depressing- I truly did not like Javi AT ALL! I realize that he was trying to keep his career front and center, but that didn't excuse his horrendous and cruel treatment of Cloister, and by extention his dog Bourneville. Right from the beginning my heart went out to Cloister, and ached for him. I could tell that he needed love, and caring, and understanding, and just a good friend, without even knowing his story. Which by the way, Javi never tried to find out. Javi knew he was offensive to a lot of people, but then spent a lot of time rationalizing his behavior to the point of narrsisism. Did I mention that I hated Javi? The sentence structure here was confusing at times, so I spent a lot of time rereading passages, to try and get the meaning. And then to have it end with Cloister crawling back to him??? WHAT?! No. Just no! There's not a clear cut ending either. It just feels like a "to be continued" scene ending. And what's with the names- Cloister? And Bourneville? Really? I'm sorry but I won't be continuing with this series. Not sorry.
