Book (Watch Me) Break You: An Enemies-to-Lovers MM Romance (Run This Town Book 1) Review :

(Watch Me) Break You was hard to rate because it encompasses so much of what I hate, and yet…it was ridiculously entertaining. I’m embarrassed to have been so entertained. The plot was preposterous. To say it was improbable is a huge kindness. It was a completely fantasy driven soap opera. And there was insta-love to a nauseating degree. The sex is sorta BDSM (more S&M than B&D in my opinion, but what do I know?) not my thing, but I can get behind it when both characters are clearly enjoying themselves. But I’m not clear on how we go from a more or less anonymous hook-up with whipping and getting choked out, to passionate kissing (I did a “Wait, what?”), to another hook-up, date, whatever leading to exclusivity and the next thing you know two crime lords are “making love” . This could have been phenomenal if Dima and X had stayed true to character; of course, then it would have been a series to get any real emotional progression and this is one book so it’s fast forward on meth.I think the main reason I liked this book so much was Dima Zhirkov, that lovable, crazy Russian. Dima was a good guy, for a New York crime lord – its all relative. Yes, he was a career criminal; and yes, he killed people when necessary – but he was kind to animals – which is really what matters. And he was deliciously, impulsively, unbalanced, He missed the memo about stoic Russians. He drinks too much, he likes his coke and he’s a hot mess with his biker boots and pierced nipples and lip and wall to wall tattoos. He sees “X” at a BDSM club and likes the way he whips and forces himself into X’s life because he has to have some of that. What he doesn’t know is that while Xavier Storm is a criminal lawyer; he’s also the brains behind the Jamaican Rude Boys – the gang, crime syndicate, whatever they are, that is his direct competition. X knows who Dima is, so clearly, he knows this isn’t going to end well. X’s boy Israel runs afoul of Dima and lives to tell the tale: How you gonna deal with your man, though?” Is asked. “I looked into the (redacted) eyes, X. That boy crazy. Like for real.” What’s not to love?Dima doesn’t just want a good beating from X; he wants “emotions” from the aloof, cold, emotionally locked down man. He wants to see X lose control and feel…something. X is nursing the wounds of a horribly tragic back story, but the crazy, endearing Russian hits all his kinks and makes him want to live again. He falls hard for his Rush. Get it Rush, cause Dima’s Russian – stupidest nickname ever. (Also, questionable for political correctness, but people who kill on the regular probably don’t worry about that stuff.) X plunges in head first, telling himself that he’s gonna come clean to Dima about his identity when the time is right. (Translation: Drama Llama, scale: Epic). The next book moves on to a different couple but gets set up here and will involve X’s “cousin” and the face of the Rude Boys, the gloriously promiscuous and homophobic Israel (Is to his friends) and his best buddy (the long suffering and much in love) Reggie. I wouldn’t necessarily continue but 1. I seem to have bought the next 2 books on sale years ago and 2. Dima cameo. Rounding up to 4 ridiculous, crazy Russian stars.
My Review:I have debated and debated how to rate this book...anywhere from an A rating down to a B...which has A- and B+ in between (so that's more of a spread than it sounds like). The tough thing is...I loved reading the book. The experience itself was really good. I liked the book. What I didn't like were these two characters and what they stand for. They are NOT nice guys. Both Dima and X are mob bosses, fighting for territory in NYC. They are brutal, vicious, and their lives are filled with drugs, gun-running, and prostitution...and they're okay with that. Even with the fact that people are dying because of them. See, not nice guys. But what Avril Ashton does with these two men is brilliant because she made them empathetic. I wanted them to find their happily ever after, whether they honestly deserved it or not. There is NO character growth arc in this book. They are mean mothers at the beginning and they stay that way until the end. And I mean that seriously. These guys are NOT guys you ever want to have a run in with, because they will kill you without a second thought. Heck, they love one another and that still doesn't keep them from physically, awfully hurting one another. But even in the gritty, dark underworld of this book, I found moments of redeeming qualities between these two. Their love is so incredibly unlikely. It made me root for them more. These are not guys who easily have/develop emotions, so when they do, that vulnerability is attractive AND that's what drew me to the characters and this story. It's a haunting story, and even though I had my issues with the bones of the set-up, I'll admit I went and one-clicked the next three in the series. Maybe this series will be my dirty little secret (which I'm sharing with all of you)...I don't want to like the characters and what they stand for, but I just can't help myself.
